A local election candidate in Co Carlow is promising that his campaign will involve “no posters, no canvas, no publicity”.

Candidate Bernard Jennings, who is an optometrist at Jennings Opticians in the town, issued a statement earlier in the week announcing that he is in the run for the local elections in the Carlow town area.

His statement adds that he will run a campaign with “no posters, no photo on ballot paper, no canvas, no publicity, no comment on issues of the day”.

He added that he decided to put his name forward for a seat on the council for “personal reasons” and that this “exercise” cost him €100.

According to a list of candidates for Carlow County Council, Mr Jennings is registered as a non-party candidate.

His statement adds that in the “unlikely” event that he is elected, he promises to do his “best, guided by the principles of common sense and motivated by the interests of Carlow Town and County”.

He also aims to, in his “maiden speech to sing ‘Follow me up to Carlow’ in a Wicklow accent”.

It is understood that no posters or leaflets of Mr Jennings have been distributed throughout the local area.
