Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan Markle, 39, had an “intimate” interview about their lives with chat show queen Oprah Winfrey last week after announcing they will not be rejoining the Royal Family. Royal correspondent Rebecca English has revealed that the royals expected the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to do something like this. She went on to warn that even if the royal couple is not critical, nothing good will come from it.
Speaking to Palace Confidential on MailPlus, Ms English said: “Although the timing is a surprise to the royal household, the fact that they’ve done this isn’t.
“I thought they thought this was very likely to happen.
“Of course they wish it wouldn’t because as someone said to me, I don’t see how this will go in any way to repairing relationships between Harry and his family.
“Surely no good can come out of it even if they’re not overly critical of the Royal Family and the palace institution itself.
“I think people expected it to be after this 12-month review had been concluded but clearly they can’t wait that long.”
Royal commentator Richard Eden added that it was surprising to see Oprah at their wedding after having met Meghan only once before.
He said: “In terms of how long it’s been in the works, being cynical I would say even before the royal wedding.
“I remember watching those guests arrive at St George’s Chapel and we saw Oprah there and thought, didn’t even know she knew Harry and Meghan.
Meghan and Harry: Palace needed decision 'before Oprah' says expert
“After doing some investigating it came out that she had met Meghan only once and she had never met Harry.
“It does seem to be a question of them using each other.
“She’s courted them over the past three years and they’ve been happy to give an interview but it does make you wonder what they were thinking even before the royal wedding.
“What were they planning, particularly Meghan.”
