‘No deal would be CATASTROPHIC’ – Cabinet Secretary issues bleak warning amid Brexit chaos

Cabinet Secretary, Sir Mark Sedwill issued a damning letter to Cabinet in which he argues a no deal Brexit would have serious repercussions. In his 14-page letter which was leaked to the Daily Mail, Sir Mark highlights the problem the direct ramifications on the police, security services and the potentially damaging consequences to Northern Ireland. Following the rejection of a customs union, confirmatory referendum, a Norway-style arrangement which would keep the UK in the single market and a possible extension to Article 50, the chances of a no deal Brexit have increased significantly.

In his letter, Sir Mark, who also serves as the government’s national security advisor, said: “Our national security would be disrupted.

“The UK would forfeit access to criminal justice levers.

“None of our mitigation measures would give the UK the same security capabilities as our current ones.

“A No Deal exit would enormously increase pressure on our law and security authorities and on our judicial system.

“The UK would be less safe as a result of this.”

Following Parliament’s second batch of indicative votes, Mrs May will reportedly hold a Cabinet meeting this morning.

Within that meeting, the Prime Minister will look to thrash out what the best course of action is for the country.

Although MPs did vote earlier this year to rule out a no Brexit, some within the Government have begun to shift their support behind the Brexit alternative.

In a separate letter to the Prime Minister, 170 MPs, including 10 Cabinet members, put their support behind a no deal Brexit.

Treasury Secretary, Lizz Truss said: “I think we are well-prepared for No Deal.

“I don’t have any fear of No Deal.”

The news comes as Mrs May prepares to bring her Brexit deal back to Parliament for a fourth time after it was defeated last Friday by 58 votes.
