The former Brexit Party boss also claimed the deal would never have happened if the UK had still been in the European Union. He added the deal represented what Brexiteers had always wanted, the ability to forge closer ties with English speaking “friends”. The AUKUS pact was announced on Wednesday by the leaders of the three countries involved.
The security agreement is seen as a way to counter China’s growing influence in the Asia-Pacific.
Under its terms, Australia will be allowed to build its own nuclear-powered submarines using US technology.
Analysts have described the pact, which also covers AI and other technologies, as one of the biggest defence partnerships in decades for the three countries.
However, the deal provoked a furious response from France that will now lose its contract to build 12 diesel submarines for Australia.
Mr Farage welcomed the decision to forge the new alliance against Chinese threats during his GB News show.
“This is the ‘Anglosphere’ coming together with a 21st century solution,” he declared.
“France’s diesel powered subs were a twentieth century solution, the nuclear subs are a twenty-first century solution and I welcome the ‘Anglosphere’ coming together.”
He then added: “I will say this – this deal would not have happened if it had not been for Brexit, had we been tied into an EU foreign policy.
“And we certainly would not have gone against major French government contracts.
“So Brexit has allowed us to do – and in many ways this was always the Brexiteers dream – because my view has always been that are best friends in the world speak English and I really really mean that – people with whom we have shared so much so many good things and so many bad things over the last century or two, so I welcome this deal.”
