Nigel Farage launches ruthless attack on Keir Starmer – ‘Made himself pretty unelectable’

Nigel Farage warned the Labour Party would struggle to win back voters it lost to the Conservative Party if they were not more clear on its post-Brexit immigration policy. Mr Farage insisted Sir Keir had not been clear whether he would push for a Norway-style free movement agreement with the EU at the next general election. A Norway-style free movement agreement would result in free movement of EU citizens to the UK return despite it being a key reason for Brexit, according to Mr Farage.

The Brexit Party leader predicted this strategy would not result in the Labour Party winning back the seats it lost in the December 2019 election.

He said: “Labour might make themselves very popular in parts of North of London.

“But in those constituencies that they lost to the Conservative Party at the last election, parts of Wales, the Midlands and the north of England, they are not going to get those voters back with a pledge like this.

“I think Keir Starmer has pretty much made himself pretty unelectable.”

Earlier in the interview, Mr Farage said: “The Labour Party used to be for the workers, now it is for big business and the corporates.

“They want freedom of movement to continue for as long as possible and to be extended to as much of the world as they can because they want cheap labour.

“That is where Keir Starmer has put himself, he is not absolutely committing to going for a Norway-style deal with free movement but he is saying he will listen to businesses.”

As Norway is part of the European Economic Area (EEA) their citizens are granted free movement to countries within the European Union.

Although Norway is not a member of the European Union this agreement allows the nation to benefit from free movement of people from the EU.

Mr Farage continued: “Immigration has not been as big an issue as it was in the run-up to 2016 but it still does matter.

“If Keir Starmer is going to win this leadership contest, which looks very likely, by leaving the door open to Labour being a party of free movement, has he made himself more or less electable?

“I think a Labour Party that wants to reverse the result of the referendum is away with the fairies.”

Mr Farage claimed Keir Starmer had been unclear in his interview on the Today programme on Monday morning.

When asked about a new freedom of movement agreement with the EU, Sir Keir side-stepped the question and spoke on the importance of not restricting trade for businesses.

He said: “My argument that we should be economically close to the EU is based on what many businesses have said to me over the United Kingdom.

“Almost any business that deals with Europe has said don’t make it harder for us to trade.”

Sir Keir is up against Rebecca Long-Bailey and Lisa Nandy to become the next Labour leader – with the winner of the contest being announced in April.
