Nigel Farage delivers explosive reply to no deal Brexit report – ‘Olly Robbins special’

Nigel Farage has delivered an explosive reply to a leaked document which claims the UK will face shortages of fuel, food and medicine under a no deal Brexit. Speaking on his Sunday morning LBC show, the Brexit Party leader claimed the threats were “not believable at all”. Mr Farage said: “Operation chaos, Whitehall’s secret no deal plan is leaked. It is all going to be a disaster. We are doomed, if we leave without a deal.

“We are going to struggle to get enough fresh food. Struggle to get medicines, it is going to be a disaster.

“A hard border is going to be put back in Northern Ireland, and it’s marked, Operation Yellowhammer, which is the Government’s no deal planning official and sensitive.”

He added: “Now, what do I make of all this? I don’t think this is really a Government document at all, I think it’s a civil service document, I call it an Olly Robbins special.

“There is no way the civil service have been neutral through this whole process, they are doing their utmost to stop Brexit.

“Of course, the classic way these things are done, is through fear-mongering.

“The clue as to why it is so completely ridiculous is to suggest that a few months after Brexit the amount of goods entering and leaving this country could be down by 50 percent.

“What are they suggesting? Is Mr Juncker, once he gets better, going to have U-boats in the Channel sinking our ships? What are they talking about, we are not at war.”

He continued: “Even if we have fundamental disagreements…do you know what those German companies are going to want to sell us their goods.

“Why don’t we take the word of the President of the Port of Calais when he told us there would be no disruption at all. We do get disruption when there are severe gales. We do get disruption when the French fishermen, as they regularly do, strike. We do get disruption when a train breaks down in the Channel.

“To suggest that the flow of goods would fall by 50 percent is so extreme in terms of its scaremongering, that it is not believable at all.”

Mr Farage launched his attack on the civil service for its role in the Brexit process. Olly Robbins has been criticised for his role as the Prime Minister’s Europe Adviser and Chief Negotiator for Exiting the European Union from 2017 to 2019.

The leaked dossier, which appeared in the Sunday Times, warned Britain will face shortages of fuel, food and medicine under a no deal Brexit.

The document warns to 85 percent of lorries using main channel crossings “may not be ready” for French customs, meaning disrupt at the ports.

A hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is also considered as likely as current plans to avoid widespread checks appears unsustainable.

The dossier predicts price hikes in supermarkets as a result of reduced fresh food availability and hints passengers will face long delays at EU airports, St Pancras, Eurotunnel and Dover.

A senior Whitehall source told The Sunday Times: “This is not Project Fear — this is the most realistic assessment of what the public face with no deal. These are likely, basic, reasonable scenarios — not the worst case.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to deliver Brexit by the end of October “come what may”, with the Tory Party leader demanding changes to the withdrawal agreement before the UK re-enters discussions with the EU.

The Brussels bloc has refused to renegotiate the withdrawal agreement, and stood firm against ejecting the controversial backstop mechanism within the deal.

The Prime Minister is yet to meet EU leaders since taking over from Theresa May, but Mr Johnson will travel to Paris and Berlin next week to meet Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel for crunch Brexit talks.

The meetings will take place ahead of the G7 summit in Biarritz, with the clock counting down to Britain’s departure from the bloc on October 31.

The Cabinet Office and Number 10 told Express.co.uk they would not be commenting on leaked documents.

Sunday Times journalist Rosamund Urwin posted the Sunday Times story on Twitter, writing: “This is not Project Fear — it’s what we face after no-deal Brexit”. Operation Yellowhammer is not the worst case scenario (that’s Black Swan), this is the government’s “base” scenario”.

Responding to the Tweet, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Michael Gove, wrote on Twitter: “We don’t normally comment on leaks – but a few facts – Yellowhammer is a worst case scenario – v significant steps have been taken in the last 3 weeks to accelerate Brexit planning – and Black Swan is not an HMG doc but a film about a ballet dancer…”
