Nigel Farage criticised over World War 2 sirens at Birmingham rally

The sound effects boomed out as the Brexit Party party leader took to the stage at the NEC in a heavily-choreographed grand entance which featured the wailing World War 2 sirens, a blackout and then supporters waving coloured glowsticks. The spectacle was praised by Brexit Party backers who posted footage of Mr Farage’s rapturous welcome on social media. But others were offended by the wartime imagery used as the rally’s opener.

The Brexit Party thinks we are actually at war with the rest of Europe

Sarah Mackie said: “Please tell me I’m not the only one to find it disturbing that the Brexit Party used an air raid siren during Farage’s intro? My blood runs cold just hearing it.”

Otto English posted: “Nigel Farage literally entered the NEC to the sound of air raid sirens… in a blackout. It’s bizarre wartime cosplay.”

James Melville tweeted: “Britain is in an era of demagogue populism and xenophobia. There are parallels with the early 1930’s Weimar Republic. We forget the tragic lessons of history at our peril.”

Cathie Wood wrote: “Air raid sirens as the warm up to the Brexit Party rally in what feels like an aircraft hangar. Very very creepy and frankly terrifying. What are these people on? Do they really want a war?”

Brendan May said: “Final proof, if it were needed, that the #BrexitParty thinks we are actually at war with the rest of Europe. Farage comes on to the sound of air raid sirens. These people are deeply ill.”

But Brexit Party supporters have backed Mr Farage.

West Midlands Brexit Party MEP Martin Daubney described the introduction as an “Epic entry from Nigel Farage” .

Michael Heaver, a former spokesman for the ex-UKIP leader, said: “Brexit Party’s Martin Daubney clocks up 430,000+ views in less than 24 hours for yesterday’s rally. If BBC don’t want to give proper coverage we’ll do it ourselves.”

And a Farage supporter called Jean also defended the leader’s raucous political rally on social media.

She tweeted: “Patriotism! Love of country! Farage LOVES the UK! He wants her to be a sovereign nation again, in control of her own future.”
