Nicola Sturgeon’s independence dream on the BRINK as SNP leader’s bid dealt fresh blow
Sir Keir Starmer is the current favourite to win the Labour Party leadership election. During an interview with Iain Dale on LBC, Starmer vowed to fight for a strong United Kingdom and support the Scottish Labour Party in the upcoming election in 2021 if he is elected as Jeremy Corbyn’s successor.
Sir Keir Starmer said: “One of the things I said to our Scottish colleagues when I was there a few weeks ago was if I am elected leader, I will be straight back to Scotland to work with them for the 2021 Scottish elections.
“There is obviously the question of whether people want Scotland to be torn apart and independent from the United Kingdom – I don’t.
“I think we are stronger if all of the United Kingdom stays together.
“I don’t want more borders, I don’t want it more difficult for people.
LBC’s Iain Dale asked: “Would you support Nicola Sturgeon’s call for another referendum?”
The Labour MP replied: “No, I think we should go into the 2021 election making the argument for the United Kingdom.
“I feel we have got stuck as the Labour Party defending the status quo or arguing against independence.
“I think we need to make a stronger case for the United Kingdom but in the 21st century and Scotland having more powers.
“We have got a big job to do in Scotland.”
Scotland is in danger of being “left behind” with Nicola Sturgeon as the First Minister according to the Scottish Conservative Party leader.
Jackson Carlaw told Express.co.uk SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon‘s “hugely diverging tax base” will result in Scotland losing businesses and talented people to other parts of the United Kingdom.
Mr Carlaw argued the people of Scotland will “vote with their feet” and move to other parts of Britain were they are taxed less.

The Scottish Conservative Party leader said: “It is potential damage to Scotland.
“In this post-Brexit economy, we want entrepreneurs to come and set up in Scotland.
“If we continue to see a hugely diverging tax base in Scotland then people who set up businesses and talented people, not the super-rich, but people between £26,000 and £50,000 who are individually paying today £1,500 more each in tax.
“People are going to vote with their feet and set up those businesses and take the most talented people to other parts of the United Kingdom.
“Scotland is in danger of getting left behind with Nicola Sturgeon.”
