Nicola Sturgeon squirms as Peston exposes massive flaw in plan to oust Boris Johnson

The SNP leader was speaking from Holyrood in Edinburgh when she appeared on ITV Peston on Wednesday night. Outlining her plan to stop Scotland leaving the EU “against its will”, Ms Sturgeon explained in the “long term” her plan was to cut ties with the UK completely so Scotland could be an independent nation. In the short term, she revealed a plan to oust Boris Johnson and install a so-called caretaker government of unity and “move to a general election as quickly as possible”.

But Mr Peston exposed a huge flaw in the plot.

After Mr Peston asked the Scottish nationalist about the “stumbling blocks in the way”, Ms Stugeon said: “People can’t agree on what the shape of that interim arrangement would look like.

“We have the Labour leadership saying it has to be Jeremy Corbyn – we have got the Liberals saying it cannot under any circumstances be Jeremy Corbyn.”

After she admitted she would be prepared to work with Jeremy Corbyn and “look at all options”, ITV host Mr Peston went on to press Ms Sturgeon: “As you say, arguably Jeremy Corbyn would have very little power if he was a caretaker Prime Minister because he wouldn’t command a natural majority in the House of Commons.

“Why is Jo Swinson so reluctant to heed what you say?”

Ms Sturgeon was flustered.

She said: “I can’t really answer that question.

“You’d have to ask that of Jo Swinson – I start to worry if other opposition parties really want a general election.

“I do not know the answer to that question. But what I do know is that if we are serious about wanting to explore all options to avoid a no deal Brexit, I am prepared to put aside my own party political interests.”

“I think if everyone in the opposition parties had the same attitude we should be able to come together.

“Unlike Jo Swinson and others who don’t appear to want to do that.

“They want to stop a no deal Brexit. But they are not prepared to explore all of the options to do that.”

Further rifts among Remain rebels were exposed during the ITV programme.

Disagreements over who should lead the caretaker government came to the fore as Labour’s Richard Burgon and Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Woolston feuded over the position.

Speaking on Peston, Mr Burgon insisted the Lib Dems were the main obstacle to the plan due to their opposition to Mr Corbyn.

However, responding to Mr Burgon’s accusations, Ms Wollaston pointed out Mr Corbyn simply doesn’t have the Parliamentary support.

Ms Wollaston said: “I’ve tweeted a link to the numbers.

“The first rule of politics is to be able to count.

“You’re still fifty short even if the Liberal Democrats abstained.”

But Mr Burgon fired back: “The right way forward is for a caretaker, Prime Minister solely for the purpose of securing the extension if Boris Johnson won’t get it and calling a general election.”

Quizzed by Robert Peston over why the Labour Party will not pick a secondary candidate, Mr Burgon labelled any other candidate as “ludicrous”.
