Nicola Sturgeon has been accused of “undermining” the British Government throughout the coronavirus crisis by revealing COBRA details and dismissing the Stay Alert slogan. Times journalist Clare Foges railed against the First Minister’s tactics and pointed to Scotland’s failing education and health systems as examples of poor leadership. LBC host Iain Dale agreed with the proposition, exposing to Sky News all the reasons why the SNP leader’s record was “appalling”.

He said: “Nicola Sturgeon is a brilliant political leader.

“She talks a good game, she’s great at political communications and that is evidenced in this article.

“What she’s less good at is policy.

“If you look at the Scottish education system, it plummeted 25 points in the OEC rankings last year.”

Mr Dale continued: “Only one other country in the world did that.

“You look at the other record on COVID-19. Far more deaths in Scottish care homes than in England.

“Far more deaths in poorer areas of Scotland than in England.

“A great lack of testing, far greater than in England.”

The LBC host added: “Yet we’re all led to believe that Scotland is doing well in this crisis, it absolutely is not.

“That’s because her record on the Scottish health service is appalling.”

Initially the First Minister had rejected the Government’s new ‘stay alert, control the virus, save lives’ messaging, along with the other devolved leaders.

She had warned that “people will die unnecessarily” if progress in curbing the virus is undone by “mixed messages”.

Ms Sturgeon had confirmed that the lockdown measures in Scotland would continue.

However, now the First Minister has announced that Scotland will join the UK.

She confirmed that the country is aiming to ease the coronavirus lockdown on May 28.

A “route map” for lifting restrictions, including a phased return to school and guidance to key industries, will be published this week.
