First Minister and SNP leader, Nicola Sturgeon, has repeatedly come under fire for opposing Brexit and threatening the UK Government with Scottish independence. Former Brexit Party MEP Ben Habib revealed there is a fatal flaw with Ms Sturgeon’s desire to leave the United Kingdom and rejoin the European Union. During an interview with Express.co.uk, Mr Habib claimed that all 27 member states would refuse acceptance of Scotland if Ms Sturgeon asked to rejoin the bloc.
He claimed the EU would be wary of whether Scotland would be an economic liability and whether it would set a dangerous precedent among other member states.
Mr Habib said: “Unless Nicola Sturgeon has shown she is able to demonstrate she can comply with the eurozone requirements and she is able to demonstrate that Scotland would be a net contributor to the EU, I don’t think any of the 27 member states would want Scotland.
“Why would they want to take on a liability?”
Mr Habib also noted admitting Scotland into the EU, after it had separated from the UK, could spell future trouble for the bloc.

He claimed the EU’s support of Scotland could result in separatist notions within other countries, like Spain, arising.
Mr Habib said: “The other point you have got to remember is that lots of states in the EU also have their own separatist issues.
“Spain, for example, would be very loathed to welcome Scotland with open arms.
“This would be because of a fear it would stoke its own separatism in Catalonia and the Basque regions.
“Spain has got its own problems and if it is seen to be assisting Scotland in breaking away from the UK, it is setting a precedent for its own problems.”
Mr Habib claimed that Ms Sturgeon would face considerable resistance from member states if she hoped to break away from the UK to join the EU.
He added: “I think there would be huge push back within the European Union.”
Mr Habib then emphasised his biggest issue with the First Minister and why he took issue with her consistent pushes for Scottish independence.

He said: “Let’s just be clear on Nicola Sturgeon.
“Nicola Sturgeon uses this whole EU thing as a political whipping horse against the United Kingdom.
“She does it to keep herself in power, she does it to try and mobilise the Scottish people behind her.
“She does it also to cover-up the shocking record that the SNP has in governing Scotland itself.”
