Nicky Morgan stands down as an MP

Culture Secretary Nicky Morgan has announced she will not stand in the forthcoming general election.

She cited ‘the clear impact on my family’ and the ‘abuse’ of doing the job of a modern MP’, as reasons for stepping down.

Ms Morgan has represented Loughborough for the Conservatives since 2010 and was previously education secretary.

In a post on Twitter, she said: ‘For the first time in 18 years I won’t be a candidate in the next General Election.

‘I’ve loved being Loughborough’s voice in Westminster since 2010 and being DCMS Secretary – and I look forward to supporting the PM, Government, Conservative Party and my successor in the future.’

In her resignation letter, Ms Morgan said: ‘But the clear impact on my family and the other sacrifices involved in, and the abuse for, doing the job of a modern MP can only be justified if, ultimately, Parliament does what it is supposed to do, represent those we serve in all areas of policy, respect votes cast by the electorate and make decisions in the overall national interest.’

She added: ‘I want to thank all the Conservative members and supporters in Loughborough and the many truly wonderful constituents I have met over the years.

‘You have become good friends and I feel truly blessed to know you all. I want to publicly record my thanks to [my husband] Jonathan for his unstinting support since I was first selected in 2004.

‘I also want to thank David Cameron and Boris Johnson for asking me to be part of their Cabinet teams – another enormous privilege. And to thank my fellow MPs who elected me in 2017 to be the first female chair of the wonderful House of Commons Treasury Select Committee.

‘I look forward to supporting the Prime Minister and my successor in our forthcoming campaign and beyond.

‘With my very best wishes, Nicky.’

Earlier on Wednesday, Tory former de-facto deputy prime minister Sir David Lidington and his former Cabinet colleague Amber Rudd said they too would stand down as MPs ahead of the poll in December.
