Healthcare assistants Jodie Toal and her partner Jamie returned to their home in Blackpool, Lancashire, from a six-hour shift on Christmas Day to find windows smashed and the back door wide open. Expensive belongings and vital savings for the fertility treatment were missing.
Jodie told LancsLive: “We are heartbroken about it. We are nervous. We can barely sleep. We are off work.
“We are key workers. We have worked throughout the whole of the pandemic. We get tested every week for Covid and have never had a day off work the whole time and this has led to us being off work.
“Not only are we afraid to be in our own home, but we are also afraid to be out of the home. We don’t feel safe.”
The couple were at work for 2pm after going to their parents’ houses on Christmas Day morning, knowing they were not going to have much of a day because they were working.
They toiled for six hours and then between 8pm and 11pm were at Jodie’s mum’s where they enjoyed Christmas dinner before returning home, having to work again on Boxing Day.
The couple opened the door after emptying the car of all the Christmas presents and walked into their house.
On entering the front room, Jodie was shocked to see all her handbags had been emptied.
She then raced upstairs to find a safe, with what Jodie described as a substantial amount of money inside, had also been taken.

Her makeup as well as expensive jewellery and watches had all been snatched too.
Jodie suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome which is a condition affecting how ovaries work. It can greatly diminish a woman’s ability to fall pregnant.
She had been saving for years in preparation for when she felt ready to have children.
Jodie said: “Since 2016 I have been saving and putting money away and obviously that money has been taken now.

“Not only has our present time and our past been taken away from us, our future now could also be at a detriment because we don’t know if we will be able to afford that.
“It’s very sad because we are very good people.”
Traumatised, the couple phoned the police, later changing the locks after spotting that keys had even gone missing.
The key workers say they now feel so frightened they struggle to sleep and have had to take time off work from their vital roles.
They believe a crowbar found at the back of their property was used to break into their home.
Jodie said: “We’ve not even been in the property a year and it’s just sad that it has happened, not just at Christmas.
“We never expected to come home to a smashed home and things stolen, but unfortunately, we have.”
A fundraiser has been set up for the pair on GoFundMe to help the couple re-establish some of their savings.
To date, £950 has been raised towards their £7,000 goal.
