NHS boss who worked at hospital where Letby’s spree took place is suspended

The former senior NHS manager at the hospital where Lucy Letby murdered seven babies has now been suspended from her role.

Alison Kelly, who was the nursing director at the Countess of Chester Hospital while Letby went on her killing spree between June 2015 and June 2016, is said to have ignored “serious concerns” about Letby.

Before being suspended this morning, Kelly was working as the interim director of nursing for Salford, within the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust. Local politicians called for her position to be investigated by Government ministers.

An NHS England spokesperson said: “We welcome the independent inquiry announced by the Department of Health and Social Care into the events at the Countess of Chester and will cooperate fully to help ensure all lessons are learned.

“In light of information that has emerged during the trial of Lucy Letby, and the announcement of the independent inquiry, the Northern Care Alliance has suspended Alison Kelly.”

The NHS managers who are accused of neglecting to act amid repeated warnings that Letby was a threat to newborn babies could lose their pensions if they are convicted of criminal negligence or corporate manslaughter.

The number of babies suffering serious and unexpected collapses in the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital rose between 2015 and 2016. Senior managers first mentioned that Letby was present when collapses took place back in late June 2015.

As more unexplained and unusual collapses followed, consultants raised further concerns about the nurse to hospital bosses, Manchester Crown Court heard.

But Letby was only removed from the hospital in July 2016 after the deaths of three triplet boys and the collapse of another baby in June of that year.

She was confined to clerical work and registered a grievance procedure in 2016, which was resolved in favour of Letby two months later.

She was expected to return to the unit in March 2017 but this never happened as police were contacted by the hospital.

Letby is expected to spend the rest of her life in jail after being convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder a further six during her shifts.
