New wellness gadget collects health information from your pee
A new gadget will tell you all about your body’s health metrics and all you need to do is pee on it.
U-Scan is the latest offering from Withings, a well-known health and wellness company, and was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The white, pebble-shaped device sits inside your toilet bowl and collects urine through a special inlet. Once the pee is collected, it passes through to special pods where a variety of chemical reactions takes place.
The results of these reactions are read by an optical module which, in turn, feeds the information through to a companion app on your smartphone to offer a ‘large variety of health information.’
Withings says the cartridges that sit inside the test pods will need to be replaced every three months. The U-Scan itself has a rechargeable battery the same as your phone. We’d recommend a quick clean before plugging it in, though.
A successful pee will likely be able to tell you about things like your body’s pH, vitamin C, and ketone levels. It’ll also let you know about your fluid levels and protein balance helping you to optimise your diet and nutrition.

‘The ability of U-Scan to perform daily urine analysis from the home will allow Withings to take its mission to help consumers fully utilize urine data to an entirely new level,’ said Mathieu Letombe, Withings CEO.
‘It’s one of the most exciting and complex products we have ever announced. We begin this journey with U-Scan Cycle Sync and Nutri Balance and look forward to announcing more cartridges on an ongoing basis as well as medical applications of the technology.’
Withings says the U-Scan will launch in Europe in the second quarter of 2023 and will cost €500 (£440).
