Boris Johnson has been asked to explain himself after a new picture emerged of him with an open bottle of bubbly during a Christmas quiz in December 2020.

The Daily Mirror has obtained a photo of the PM flanked by three members of staff, one wearing tinsel and another a Santa hat, during an event alleged to have taken place while the nation was in lockdown.

The story came out as the embattled leader faced yet another bruising PMQs.

He was put on the spot as he was told by Labour MP Fabian Hamilton r that ‘in the last few minutes a picture has emerged… which looks a lot like one of the Christmas parties he told us never happened’.

The incident is said to have happened on December 15 and is not one of the 12 being investigated by the Met Police.

At the time London was under Tier 2 regulations banning any social mixing between two or more people from different households.

Official guidance also stated: ‘You must not have a work Christmas lunch or party, where that is a primarily social activity and is not otherwise permitted by the rules in your tier.’

It had already been reported that the PM allegedly hosted a virtual Christmas quiz on December 15 2020 – though it is not currently under investigation. When the story broke, the prime minister said: ‘I can tell you once again that I certainly broke no rules.’

One Covid laws expert said that Scotland Yard should now add the quiz to the list of events it is probing.

Barrister Adam Wagner told The Mirror: ‘The previous photograph of the Prime Minister showed what could have been a meeting briefly interrupted by a Zoom call.

‘However, the new photograph shows four people with alcohol and food, as well as a Christmas hat and tinsel, which suggests a Christmas party.’

Mr Hamilton raised the picture at PMQs and asked would the prime minster refer it to the police.

The PM replied: ‘He is completely in error’
