New dad Prince Harry steps out for Cricket World Cup – but Meghan and Archie stay at home
The new dad, 34, left Meghan Markle, 37, at home with baby Archie, who was born earlier this month. Harry looked smart in a grey suit and showed no signs of sleepless nights as he gave a speech to launch the global sporting event at the Oval in London. He said: “The first ever cricket World Cup took place in England in 1975 and I’m delighted that the UK will once again play host to this wonderful global sporting event featuring ten incredible teams who, thanks to the UK’s cultural diversity, will feel as though they are competing in front of a home crowd every time they take to the field.”
England are ranked world number one after four solid years on an upward trajectory and the nation’s captain Eoin Morgan said they have the chance to give their sport a once-in-a-lifetime lift over the next six weeks.
Before the match, Harry met school children aged 8-12 years old who have been selected as Anthem Children from the Cricket World Cup youth engagement programme.
He also spent time with a group of young people picked as flag bearers who walked out ahead of the teams, carrying the competing nations’ flags for the pre-match national anthems.
And the royal is watching part of the game before going back to dad duties.
It comes after Harry stoked the rivalry between England and Australia ahead of the tournament yesterday when the team captains met at Buckingham Palace.
The 34-year-old joked to Australia’s captain Aaron Finch asking him: “You’re getting on a bit now, aren’t you? How long have you been playing?”
The Queen also met the group of world-class bowlers, batters and all-rounders who later joined a garden party at the palace.
Harry has completed a string of engagements since the arrival of Archie on May 6.
Last week, he spent his first night away from the tot as he travelled to Rome, Italy, to play in a polo match in aid of his charity Sentebale.
