The highly controversial fifth season of Netflix royal drama The Crown is set to hit screens on Wednesday, displaying an interpretation of royal life in the 1990s. The new season is set to be “more dangerous” than previous episodes as Netflix tackles some extremely sensitive historical moments for the Royal Family. Royal author Katie Nicholl offered her assessment of The Crown having watched some of the new episodes ahead of the official Netflix release. The Vanity Fair royal editor warned the series is likely to leave viewers feeling “uncomfortable” as the dramatisation of some royal events is “too raw” for entertainment.

Speaking of the upcoming series with GB News, Ms Nicholl declared: “It’s far more dangerous.”

The royal author reported: “I came away from it feeling uncomfortable, having watched it, which I didn’t feel with the previous series.

“I felt like there had been enough distance, this just feels too raw, feels too close to the bone.”

Addressing the Royal Family’s response to the series, Ms Nicholl added: “I think the Royals are going to be watching this quite closely.”

Ms Nicholl offered particular insight into the depiction of King Charles, who will be portrayed by actor Dominic West in the upcoming release.

She said: “[The King’s] plight to make the world a better place, his innovation from an early age, that is really well-captured, but it’s the awkwardness of so many of the scenes.

“It’s the uncomfortableness of listening to the transcript of that conversation – tampon-gate – all over again. It leaves you feeling icky and uncomfortable.”

She added: “The King is about to go and unveil a statue of his late mother in York and yet people are going to be tuning in and watching this – a reprisal, someone’s interpretation, of a really difficult period in royal history.

“I think there is a sense that it just feels a little unfair for the King to be starting his reign with this hanging over him.”

The King is set to travel to York on the day of The Crown’s release to officially unveil a memorial statue of Queen Elizabeth II.

York Central MP Rachael Maskell said the event will be a “poignant time” for the King as the unveiling will “mark the life of his mother”.

Unfortunately, Ms Nicholl suggested the engagement is likely to be overshadowed by the Netflix debut of the new series which is set to include some sensitive moments from the King’s personal life.

Series five of The Crown will heavily feature the deterioration of the relationship between the King and the late Princess Diana.

The show is also tipped to include an infamous leaked phone conversation between King Charles and the Queen Consort which could prove highly embarrassing within the Palace.

Reviews of the series have so far presented mixed conclusions. The Guardian reported the show now feels as if “its time has come and gone”.

While some actor performances were praised, the review added: “The show’s relevance is waning.”

However, a review in the Radio Times celebrated the show’s writers and noted Elizabeth Debicki for her “standout” performance as Princess Diana.

The review argued that the show does not present the Royal Family in “malice” and instead “draws around the edges” of known facts to create a “winning formula” for entertainment.

A BBC review described the show as a “gripping but badly-told soap”.
