On Wednesday, the home affairs committee was told the total was £1.2million, but the Government yesterday clarified that this figure related to Afghan refugees alone. There are 25,000 asylum seekers and a further 12,000 Afghan refugees in hotels, the Home Office said.

Based on the figures provided, this works out at an average of £127 per person daily.

It puts the overall cost annually at as much as £1.7billion, based on this daily projection.

Calling the hotel policy “thoroughly inadequate”, Home Secretary Priti Patel said the Government and local authorities were “absolutely struggling” to move Afghan refugees into suitable, permanent accommodation. She said: “We do not want people in hotels.”

Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council, called the use of hotels “an incredibly costly and failed strategy that could be easily fixed by using public money more effectively to house refugees in our communities and by allowing them the right to work”.
