Mystery over baby's death after it was airlifted to hospital

A baby has died after being airlifted to hospital, with police now investigating the ‘unexplained death’.

Tragedy struck as emergency services were called to a home in Chilton, County Durham on Wednesday.

An air ambulance raced the child to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

But the baby died not long after arrival, around 2.30pm.

A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: ‘Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.’

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said that two ambulances were sent to the property as well as assistance by air.

They added: ‘We received a call at 2.08pm this afternoon to reports of an incident at a private address in the Ferryhill area.

‘We dispatched two ambulance crews and requested support from the Air Ambulance.’

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance confirmed that a patient was taken to hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

He said: ‘We mobilised at 14.16 and landed at 14:27. A patient was then flown to hospital.’
