Mum’s warning as ‘gut instinct’ saved son’s life after spotting key symptom
Trips to the GP with kids can be common as a mum.
But one mum has warned never to feel like concerns about a child’s health aren’t valid after her own gut instinct saved her toddler’s life.
Rosie Leahy said her son Daniel Bell, then aged three, was a “chilled out” toddler who was “happy and full of energy”.
But she noticed he started getting tired through the day and went back to having afternoon naps as well as tantrums.
While on holiday in May 2014, Rosie said Daniel woke up vomiting which really raised her alarm, reports the Liverpool Echo.

She said: “It was weird because he didn’t have a temperature or anything.
“I remember seeing a card with brain tumour symptoms and I immediately thought everything tied in.
“I went to the GP and felt like a crank but she was lovely.
“She thought it could be hay fever as he was rubbing his eyes a lot and told us to come back in a week but he was still ill.”
When the pair returned the doctor had a very different verdict.
She said: “The doctor then said it could be a brain tumour so he was sent straight to Ormskirk A and E.”
Tests soon showed a large mass on Daniel’s brain and within minutes of finding out, he was blue-lighted to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital where he underwent immediate surgery.
The next morning Daniel underwent another operation – lasting around nine hours.
Parents Rosie and Colin were warned Daniel could lose the ability to talk.
Rosie added: “I remember it being huge, the size of an adult fist, but he was tiny.

“After his second operation I heard him screaming at the nurses and I could hear he was okay, it was such a relief.”
Now aged 12, Daniel is healthy, in high school and enjoys performing arts.
And Rosie has advice for other parents.
She said: “Trust your gut. I knew he wasn’t right.
“A lot of people told me he was probably ok but I knew he wasn’t and I pushed to make sure he got a diagnosis.”
