The package was left in her bin as a “safe place,” but it is possible that waste collectors unintentionally took it away. When the delivery was made to the mother-of-two’s house in Birmingham, she was away visiting her family. A delivery note stating that the package had been left in her wheelie bin on August 25 was put through the letterbox by the postman.
It was missing when she got home the next day, and it is possible that city council waste collectors emptied the bin during their weekly routine pick-up.
The mother added that she is unable to get a refund from the uniform company as the parcel was “marked as delivered”, reports Birmingham Live.
She claims she has never instructed the Royal Mail to leave packages in her bins.
She said the uniform for her 12-year-old son – for a secondary school with a strict uniform policy – can only be ordered online and she will have to fork out to replace the missing items.
The parcel, sent by Schoolwear Solutions, contained a school blazer, two pairs of trousers, two long-sleeve shirts, a polo shirt, hooded top, tracksuit bottoms, games shorts and a school rucksack. The bill totalled £203.92.
The Royal Mail said they are in talks with the customer as they attempt to resolve the issue and potentially arrange a refund.
The mum, who asked not to be named, said: “The company said that I would have to claim it back from Royal Mail, as it shows on their side as delivered.
“I think it was in the bin and it was collected on the normal collection day (Friday). A safe place is not the bin!
“Unfortunately, my son can’t wear his old blazer as I’ve thrown it away as it didn’t fit him anymore, so he will have to just go in his shirt and old trousers which will be too small for him as he’s grown a lot over the summer.”
Mum’s product order:
High School Blazer w/logo – 1 – £43.99
High School Games shorts – 1 – £14.99
Slim fit trousers – 2 – £29.98
Long sleeve shirts (twin pack) – 2 – £31.98
High School tracksuit bottoms – 1 – £22.99
High School rucksack – 1 – £16.50
High School hooded top – 1 – £27.50
High School polo shirt – 1 – £15.99
Total: £203.92
“The uniform shop said they will try and ship the new order as soon as possible, but they don’t know when they will have the trousers in stock.
“The reorder has cost me double because Royal Mail is incompetent.
“It has been very stressful chasing what happened.
“He went back to school on Wednesday (September 7).
“The school has a very strict uniform policy, so I contacted the school and informed them of the problem so he doesn’t get in trouble.
“My son is gutted that he doesn’t have his uniform and didn’t want to go back without it, especially when my other son has all of his uniform.
“Buying uniform is a very expensive and stressful time, without all these issues and no one taking accountability for it.”
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “While the vast majority of mail is delivered safely and on time, we are always very sorry to hear reports of an item not being delivered.
“We are looking into what happened on this occasion, and are in touch with our customer about this.”
