Carson was found unconscious close to trees beside a rugby pitch.

Chris Parry, headteacher at Lewis School Pengam, where Carson was a pupil, said on Facebook yesterday: “We’ve woken this morning to the devastating news that one of our pupils sadly passed away last night. At such an awful time I’m sure that everyone in our community will join with us in passing on our deepest condolences and sympathy to everyone touched by this tragic event.”

He added: “Support will be made available to any pupils or staff in the weeks ahead but in the meantime our thoughts are with the family, we literally have no words.”

Det Chief Insp Sam Payne said: “At this time inquiries are ongoing and the investigation into this young boy’s death are still in the early stages.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
