Mum's body found during search for parents who vanished on Mexico kayak trip

A body found off the coast of a Mexican beach has been confirmed as a mum who went missing during a kayaking trip over Thanksgiving.

Corey Allen and Yeon-Su Kim were kayaking on a beach in Mexico with their 14-year-old daughter when they were suddenly blown out to sea by strong winds last Thursday.

Allen managed to get his daughter Lux back to shore when the weather shifted before returning to the sea to help his wife, according to a GoFundMe set up to help find them.

But the strong winds and currents soon made their return to shore impossible, prompting a desperate search by volunteers and rescue agencies.

Following a days-long rescue effort, a body was eventually discovered in the water by a small fishing boat approximately eight miles off the coast of Mayan Place at around 12.30pm yesterday, Civil Protection and Firefighters in Puerto Peñasco said in a statement.

Local media later confirmed the features on the body matched one of the two people missing, with a member of the Allen family confirming to authorities that it was Yeon-Su.

The search for Mr Allen’s body continues, with friends and family hopeful they may still find him.

Allen and Yeon-Su are a well-known couple in their hometown of Flagstaff, Arizona, and their disappearance has deeply impacted the community.

Yeon-Su was a professor of forestry at Northern Arizona University, and Allen is a real-estate agent.

The couple have two children – Lux, who is a freshman at Northland Prep Academy in Flagstaff, and Pax, who is a college freshman in Oregon.

‘They are just the nicest family. I mean, I know you interview people and people tell you that, but they really are,’ friend Bryn DeFusco told AZ Family.

‘They are so lovely and warm and engaging.’

DeFusco’s kids and the missing couple’s two children would play with each other growing up, according to the news outlet.

‘The kids, I mean obviously that was my first thought. How are the kids going to be… how altered their lives will be in the event their parents aren’t found?’ she said.

The GoFundMe for their rescue effort – organised by family friend Lisa Aumack – has posted daily updates on the search efforts since their disappearance.

‘Corey and Yeon-Su are now 54 hours overdue,’ Aumack wrote. ‘Volunteers have spent the last two days flying, boating, and searching overland, with no sightings as of yet.

‘The Mexican Navy is contributing resources via air and water, which is very helpful. We intend to continue the search [on Sunday], focusing as much resources as possible on flights across a search area south of Puerto Peñasco.’

Following the discovery of Yeon-Su’s body on Sunday afternoon, no further updates have been posted.
