Maisie Beck came to the rescue when her mum, Sophie, collapsed at home in Southport. According to LancsLive, Ms Beck was suffering from severe sepsis. She had a temperature of more than 40 degrees and was unable to move or speak clearly.

When Maisie was told by her mother that she could not breathe, Maisie took her mum’s phone and called family members for help.

The seven-year-old even thought to hold the phone to her mum’s face to unlock it.

The little girl also helped to keep her two-year-old brother calm throughout the ordeal.

Ms Beck, who works as a nurse at Ormskirk hospital, said they have spoken to Maisie about what to do in these kinds of situations.

Speaking to LancsLive, she said: “We’ve spoken to her about stuff before and what to do because I’m a nurse and her dad is a police officer but she’s just like ‘yeah, yeah, whatever’ and we didn’t think she was taking in but clearly she was.”

She added: “Thanks to my amazing little girl thinking fast and doing what she did, I’m going to be ok, I can’t put into words how grateful I am for her. She’s amazing.”

Explaining what happened, Ms Beck said: “I started to feel unwell on Sunday, although I’d been unwell for a couple of weeks and it went away.

“On Sunday, I started again with a sore throat and on Monday my temperature was just getting higher and higher.

“I had to ask my step-dad to pick up Maisie from school and at about ten to six I was on the phone to my sister and she said you really don’t look well.”

Struggling to breathe, Ms Beck lay down, telling her daughter that she wasn’t well. Maisie then took the phone and called her auntie, saying, “You need to ring an ambulance, I think mummy’s dying.”

When help arrived, Maisie dragged her mother to the front door.

Ms Beck said: “We’ve got quite a heavy front door and she couldn’t open it when everyone came round.

“I tried to stand up and just collapsed and when I came round Maisie was shouting in my face and she actually dragged me to the front door.”

The mother-of-two was rushed to a nearby hospital in an ambulance where she continued to feel confused and dizzy.

She couldn’t remember if she had taken the insulin needed for her diabetes and was still unable to walk or talk properly.

Doctors noticed she had tonsillitis but also feared that signs of sepsis were present, which was confirmed in subsequent blood tests.

Ms Beck was given regular antibiotics through an IV drip, but they initially struggled to bring down her temperature.

She was allowed to go home the following day in order to minimise her risk of catching any infections in hospital. She is now resting at home.

Maisie was apparently left feeling shaken up after the ordeal, worrying about whether or not she did the right thing.

Ms Beck said: “She just said she was really scared and keeps asking if she did enough and if she did the right thing.

“We just keep telling her she did amazing and we’re really proud.

“I think she’s now realising she did the right thing and everyone’s so proud of her.”
