A mother says she “feels like a terrible parent” because she has banned sweets and Halloween celebrations after her five-year-old daughter stole a bag of chocolates from a shop.

The mum found the confectionery under her child’s bed after they had visited a shop yesterday. The youngster had asked for treats in the store but her mother said she wasn’t going to buy them.

The woman told other parents on Reddit she intended to take her child back to the shop to pay for the chocolates with “money from the tooth fairy”.

But she was worried the rest of the punishment was “too harsh” as she had decided to scrap Halloween celebrations, trick-or-treating activities and sweets altogether for the rest of the year.

Writing online, the mother said: “I know she is five and I know it’s quite normal for them to do this and this age but she is a very intelligent girl. And it’s the fact that she laughed when I found it.

“I am not having it. I feel like a terrible parent. Like, am I not paying enough attention to her? Why does she feel the need to steal and lie so casually to my face?”

Her approach divided opinion among Reddit users, including other parents.

“Don’t take away her holiday, that’s cruel,” one posted.

Another person agreed with this argument, stating: “Good lord.. she’s FIVE! Make her pay from her money. Have a talk about how she can’t just take things and that’s the end of it.”

A third wrote: “Taking it back to the store and having her pay for it is understandable, but might be a bit too harsh to take away trick or treating.”

A minority supported the mum’s view.

One person posted: “Parenting is hard. Do whatever you feel will work best with her.”
