Laura Hogg, 34, was described as a “warm, kind, funny” woman who dedicated her life to her seven children, aged between three and 14. She was close to achieving her dream of becoming a qualified counsellor when she died, reports Staffordshire Live.

Laura’s post-mortem has come back inconclusive and, with her inquest yet to be opened, distraught relatives now face an excruciating wait for answers.

Kayleigh Afzal, Laura’s 32-year-old cousin, said: “She was such a warm, kind, funny person and a great, great mum – she adored her children.

“I was just absolutely stunned and heartbroken when I found out what had happened.

“I thought of those poor kids straight away – they must’ve been in the house when it happened. She’d been a full-time mum since she was 17, but was so close to getting qualified and having her life as she’d always wanted it; she wanted to give the kids a new lease of life.”

Laura grew up in Church Gresley, Derbyshire, but recently moved with the kids to Skegness, Lincolnshire, to start a new life near her 60-year-old mum Jane.

Kayleigh added: “Jane was back here seeing family when it happened and she’s now had to move back here. She can’t face going back to Skegness after what’s happened.

“We haven’t been told anything yet about how she died and that’s so hard, especially for the children.”

Laura, who was a single mum, died on January 22, nearly 25 years after dad Russell died at the same age. She leaves behind siblings Tom, 40; James, 35; and Emma, 33.

But Kayleigh, a mum-of-five, is now running 5km every day to raise money for the children.

“Laura was always the life and soul of the party and I’d never seen her sad,” Kayleigh, a community nurse from Swadlincote, Derbyshire, continued.

“She had so many friends and was so close to her mum; she always had time for everyone and was so chatty.”

“Laura just loved to talk to people and understand them – that’s why she would’ve made such an amazing counsellor.

“She didn’t have life insurance and I just want to raise enough money to help the children and to send them on a nice holiday.”
