Mum told she can't shop at Aldi as she's got twin sons with her

A single mum was told she couldn’t go into Aldi because she had twin sons with her.

Victoria Astley, 40, had already been queuing for half an hour when she was stopped from entering the shop with her children, aged seven.

She was told no-one was allowed in with more than one child on April 3 at the shop in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent.

Aldi have now apologised for ‘any upset caused’ and spoken to its security guards.

Victoria, a nurse, wrote on Facebook after the incident, saying: ‘Just a word of warning for single-mum Aldi shoppers with more than one child.

‘After queuing for half-an-hour with my seven-year-old twin boys at Aldi, in Fenton, we finally got to the doors when a security guard told me we weren’t allowed in as it’s only one adult with one child entry.

‘I told him that I am a single parent and there was no-one at home to watch the kids.

‘Luckily a lady behind me suggested that I went in with one twin while the other waited outside with his own trolley.

‘This caused one of my twins to get upset. He only waited about five minutes while me and my other twin boy were inside and we could see him.

‘The supermarket cashiers were alarmed because we shop in there regularly. I reported it to the manager.’

Following her Facebook post, Victoria said: ‘I’ve been off work for seven months because I’ve got osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and other chronic health conditions so I was already feeling a bit off after queuing for 30 minutes.

‘We had been to Asda previously and they had let us in no problem. I’m a single mum, I can’t leave them next door as they’re not allowed in.’

Aldi has offered Victoria a £10 voucher as a gesture of goodwill.

An Aldi spokesman said: ‘To help with social distancing, we are encouraging all customers to try to reduce the number of family members they bring with them into our stores.

‘However, where necessary, parents can of course shop with their children and we will remind the security guards at our Fenton store of our policy. We have spoken to Ms Astley to apologise for any upset caused.’
