Mum reported to police after live streaming lockdown party on Facebook

A woman hosting a party out in the back garden was reported to police after footage of the banned gathering was live streamed on Facebook.

Mandy Higgins, 54, hosted the get-together of neighbours in Corwen, Denbighshire, and uploaded footage of it to the internet.

The mum-of-four insisted those present were family members who all lived together ‘in the same cul de sac’, but admitted she ‘probably shouldn’t have done it’.

She said: ‘Our morale was just low, it will never happen again.’

Ms Higgins told the Daily Post: ‘Those in the footage are all the people that I live with, well not live with, but we live in the same cul de sac. They are my family -my son, brother and niece is in the footage.

‘I didn’t get close to them as I’m holding the phone filming it but I suppose we shouldn’t have done it but we were feeling low and we needed a morale boost.’

She continued: ‘When the police came they were very nice to us and told us to turn the music down and told us about social distancing, they knew us as a family.

‘We knocked the party on the head then.’

A spokesman for North Wales Police confirmed that an address in Clawdd Poncen had been visited by officers, and that family members were found in the garden.

He added: ‘Further patrols were carried out into the evening in the area.’

Social media users reacted with outrage at the party and called for tougher punishments to deter others from hosting similar gatherings.

Roger Williams suggested ‘fines of £1,000’ for each participant might put others off ‘from breaking the rules in this way’.

Gareth Hughes added: ‘Dopey bunch of Covidiots. There are literally millions of us who would love to throw a party, but we sensibly don’t.’

He added that the police ‘should remarkable restraint, adding that they ‘should have fined them straight away’.
