The mum-of-two said that her daughter had alerted her to the rat problem in November last year. She told Liverpool Echo: “My daughter heard a noise in her boiler cupboard which is in her bedroom. I checked the cupboard and her carpet had been eaten.” After plugging a hole in the cupboard with chicken wire and nails the family did not see another rat for a few weeks and hoped they had tackled the problem.

However, the rats soon began to infest the kitchen of the family home in Page Moss, Liverpool.

The mother, who asked not to be named, said: “A few weeks later I heard a rustling sound in the kitchen but it stopped. I came down and my bin has been ripped to pieces [but] when I tried to find this rat I couldn’t.”

Despite a family member plugging the holes in the kitchen and exterior of the house rats continued to wreak havoc in the home, including eating and destroying food.

The mother said that she had so far caught four rats in her kitchen using traps, and had since banned her young children, aged seven and ten, from entering the room because it was no longer “safe”.

The family reported the infestation to their housing provider and their local authority Knowsley Council’s environmental health team, who visited the property last week.

The mum said she has been left “disgusted” by the rat infestation in her home but says the problem is widespread in her local area.

She said: “The whole street is overrun with rats, especially [at] night time.

“It’s disgusting. Something needs to be done about [it].”

Other residents in Page Moss and nearby Huyton have also reported ongoing problems with the pests both in their homes and surrounding streets which raise health concerns for local families.

The Liverpool Echo spoke to one woman in November who reported seeing “rats as big as cats” sitting on a bin near her home.

Residents have also been posting footage of rats on social media, including a video of a rat climbing up and down the side of a house in broad daylight, and said the problems make them wary to allow their children to play in the street.

Knowsley Council has said that residents experiencing problems with rats can contact the environmental health department for help.

When approached about the rat problem in the area, Knowsley Council told Liverpool Echo that they had carried out a number of actions to crackdown on infestations in the Page Moss area.

A Council spokesperson said: “We are working with United Utilities on the sewer baiting programme, have sent information to residents about how they can reduce the risk of rats infesting their gardens and properties, and are working with owners of land in the area to clear some sites where waste has been allowed to accumulate.

“When we receive reports of rat infestation, we also worked with owners and occupiers of properties to identify the source of any infestation and any structural defects which are allowing pests to gain access.”

Council leader Councillor Graham Morgan said on Twitter that the Environmental Health Team was investigating reports and working with residents in the area to tackle the problem.

He said: “We’ve also been working with landowners to clear sites where rubbish has built up, with landlords to ensure overgrown gardens & excess rubbish are cleared & with United Utilities on their sewer baiting programme.”
