Caroline Gabe, 47, wanted to improve morale in her neighbourhood with Covid rates rising again and the fear of another lockdown. So she and her sons; Jack, 23, Harry, 13, and six-year-old Theo covered her house in festive decorations and put up thousands of lights.

The decorations include several 8ft inflatables, such as two Santas, a giant tree and a massive reindeer, and Caroline says she loves it so much she’ll do the same every year.

But people said online they feel September is far too early to put up any Christmas decorations, even during a pandemic.

Speaking to Devon Live, mum-of-three Caroline said: “I will never get sick of Christmas – it’s my absolute favourite time of year.

“I reckon this will become a routine for us every year now.

“It makes me and my kids happy, and it cheers up the neighbourhood – we get lots of people travelling down to see the house.”

Caroline and her children, who live in Port Talbot, south Wales, spent 12 hours transforming their home into a winter grotto – despite temperatures reaching 30C this week.

She’s spent more than £1,000 on the vast collection of decorations.

But online, some people said the decision was baffling.

“Much too early, not even Halloween yet,” one comment reads.

“Far too early, it’s only September,” another woman shared on Facebook.

A third user wrote: “Anything before December is too early.”

However, Caroline received some support online too.

One Facebook user posted: “With all the terrible things happening in the world, does it really matter? Good on her, something to be happy about and for everyone to enjoy.”

Another shared: “You go for it girl.”

One man said: “I think that is a really nice thing to do.”

And Caroline, who lost her cousin Julie to cancer, agrees with her fans.

It’s put smiles on a lot of people’s faces – people have slowed their cars as they pass, stopped to get pictures and messaged me on Facebook to compliment the house,” she said.
