Mother of teen killed in car crash begs US diplomat’s wife to return for questioning

Harry Dunn died when he was involved in a crash involving his motorbike and a car near RAF Croughton in Northamptonshire on August 27. The diplomat’s wife has since left the UK despite telling police that she had no plans to. She enjoys diplomatic immunity due to her husband position.

The 19-year-old victim’s mother, Charlotte Charles, has appealed to the woman as a fellow parent to come back so the family can receive more answers about what happened.

She is working with Britain’s foreign minister Dominic Raab in a bid to encourage the woman to return.

She told the BBC: “We’re really hoping to try to get her back.

“From me, as a mum, to her, as a mum, you just hope that he [Mr Raab] can try to get through to her.

“We don’t wish her any ill harm, but we don’t understand how she can just get on a plane and leave our family just utterly devastated.

“If we don’t get any luck over here, then we will go over there.”

Mr Raab also urged the US to reconsider its decision to let the diplomat’s wife use her diplomatic immunity to leave Britain.

He said in a statement: “I wish to offer my condolences to the family affected by this tragic incident.

“I have called the US Ambassador to express the UK’s disappointment with their decision, and to urge the Embassy to re-consider it.”

Police said they had applied for a waiver from diplomatic immunity to allow investigations and an interview.

Northamptonshire Police Superintendent Sarah Johnson told Sky News: ”Unfortunately we were latterly advised that the waiver had been declined and the suspect had left the UK.”

A spokesman for the US Embassy in London said it was in “close consultation” with British officials.

But it was not able to comment on “private diplomatic conversation” with the British government.

The spokesperson said: “We express our deepest sympathies and offer condolences to the family of the deceased in the tragic August 27 traffic accident.

“Any questions regarding a waiver of immunity with regard to our diplomats and their family members overseas in a case like this receive intense attention at senior levels.

“The US Embassy continues to be in close contact with the appropriate British officials.”

Diplomats and their family members are immune from prosecution in the host country under the 1961 Vienna Convention,.

But this only applies as long as they are not nationals of that country.

Their immunity can be waived by the state that has sent them.

In this particular case, the US has the power to do this.

But it seems they have have removed her from the UK before the British government could threaten to remove her itself if she did not submit to questioning.
