Most pointless double yellow lines ever painted about benches in pedestrian zone

Double yellow lines painted on the floor in an area where cars can’t reach anyway have been called the ‘most pointless parking restrictions ever.’

Over-zealous council workers drew the lines around some benches in the centre of Sheerness, Kent.

But anyone tempted to risk a quick stop will have a job on their hands.

It is impossible for traffic to reach the pedestrianised zone due to bollards set up at both ends of the road.

Parking in the area has long been outlawed anyway, leading many to claim the lines are totally pointless and an ‘eyesore.’

The local Swale Council said it was merely ‘refreshing’ double-yellows that were there already and had faded over time.

But a spokesperson conceded that they will soon have to be removed again anyway.

Local Conservative Councillor Cameron Beart wasn’t having any of it. He said: ‘These must be the most pointless double yellow lines ever.

‘They are an absolute eyesore and totally unnecessary in a pedestrianised part of the conservation area. They serve no purpose at all and should be removed.’

Stephen Jackson, whose Jacksonwood Vintage Tea Rooms overlook the section of the High Street where the lines have been painted, was equally confused.

He said: ‘You could hardly see the old lines – but that’s not an excuse for repainting them, as they shouldn’t be there now.

‘The old lines were probably there from before the benches were put in. It’s a complete waste of time.’

The pedestrianisation of the area has been controversial anyway with local traders claiming the lack of access was putting off customers.

A clock tower that usually stands proudly in the town centre is currently undergoing renovation work and is not set to return until next year.

A Swale council spokesperson said: ‘The double yellow lines that were already at the clock tower were refreshed by our lining contractors who were working to repaint yellow lines in Broadway and the high street in Sheerness.

‘We carry out regular lining and signage maintenance around Swale. These restrictions are now scheduled for removal.’
