Morrisons turns volume of check out beeps down as mark of respect to Queen

Morrisons’ checkout machines are beeping quieter in a mark of respect to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

As the world mourns the death of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, people have been leaving flowers, cards and even marmalade sandwiches outside Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Balmoral.

Meanwhile, some sporting events, marathons and carnivals have been cancelled or postponed.

Businesses have also paid tribute to the sovereign by turning their logos on social media black and issuing condolences to the Royal Family.

But some of the changes made in the run up to the funeral on Monday, September 19, have left shoppers with mixed feelings.

A post on Reddit over the weekend said Morrisons had completely turned off the ‘beep’ noise on its checkouts.

‘Being unable to tell when you have scanned something at the self service because Morrisons turned off the “beep” noise to pay respects,’ a viral post on the subreddit r/BritishProblems said.

‘I was standing in the queue for the self service in front of others for what felt like an eternity as everyone in front of me struggled.

‘I did what all Brits do and patiently became impatient wondering why everyone was struggling to scan, “how hard can it be” I thought.

‘It wasn’t until it was my turn and I found that they had turned off the beep.’

But the supermarket chain told Metro.co.uk this was not true.

Instead, the checkout beeps have just been turned down after announcements and music were switched off in all stores.

Some shoppers said they found the silence ‘quite pleasant’, while others stressed the move is ‘absolutely mad’.

‘Because if there was one thing the Queen detested with all her heart, it was the beeps at the checkouts in Morrisons,’ one Twitter user wrote.

Another said: ‘Maybe muffled bell sounds would have been a good substitute.’
