Morris dancer group drop ‘men’ to be more ‘inclusive’ – despite ban on women

A troupe of Morris dancers have dropped “men” from their name to be more inclusive – despite not admitting women.

The bell-clad hanky shakers are now known as Brighton Morris after a vote by members of the group.

Brighton Morris made the move in a bid to welcome trans men and non-binary dancers into their “largely male-presenting space”.

However, women will still not be admitted to the group, which was established in 1967 at the University of Sussex.

The group said: “Brighton Morris is always open to new dancers, regardless of their level of experience.

“The side welcomes those who feel they fit into a largely male-presenting space, whether cis male, trans men, non-binary or gender non-conforming.”

There is a Morris dancing group in Brighton which caters for women, known as Cuckoo’s Nest Morris, according to The Sun.

Morris dancing is a traditional form of English folk dance based on rhythmic steps by a group of dancers who wear bell pads on their shins.

Sticks, swords and handkerchiefs can also be wielded by the performers with some dances carried out over a pair of clay pipes laid on the floor.

Performers clap their implements together in time with the dance.

Brighton Morris has been approached for comment.
