More than 100,000 die in Europe from coronavirus but death rate slows down

The Covid-19 death toll in Europe has surpassed 100,000 people.

The death rate is the highest of any continent, with more than 165,000 people succumbing to the killer virus globally.

At least 1.13 million people have been infected with the virus in Europe, according to a tally taken by AFP on Saturday.

Italy has the most deaths with 23,660, which is only second to the United States (41,379) worldwide.

Deaths in Italy from coronavirus rose by 433 today, the lowest daily tally in a week, and the number of new cases slowed to 3,047 from a previous 3,491.

Spain’s death toll rose by 410 on Sunday, the lowest daily increase since March 22.

This prompted cautious optimism from the government that the figures are on a downward path.

It is far below the highest daily increase – 950 deaths reported on April 2 – in a sign of a slowdown of the spread of the virus after Spain imposed a strict lockdown in mid-March.

The total number of deaths has reached 20,453, the Health Ministry said.

It is the third-highest toll worldwide.

The number of deaths caused by coronavirus in the Netherlands rose by 83, Dutch health authorities said on Sunday, which was the smallest reported daily increase since March 26.

The total number of deaths among people known to have been infected with the Covid-19 increased to 3,684, while the number of confirmed infections rose by 1,066 to 32,655.

Germany’s confirmed cases have risen by 2,458 to 139,897, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed today.

That was lower than a 3,609 increase reported on Saturday, by when cases of infections had been increasing for four days in a row.

The reported death toll has risen by 184 to 4,294.

France – which has recorded close to 20,000 deaths as a result of the pandemic and has the fourth-highest toll in the world – has been in virtual lockdown for nearly five weeks and is due to start lifting some confinement measures from May 11.

Meanwhile, in the UK there are hopes the coronavirus crisis has passed its peak after another 596 people died in hospitals.

Today’s jump in deaths is significantly lower than yesterday’s increase of 888, but death figures tend to drop at the weekend due to delays in fatalities being registered.

At least 16,060 people have died from coronavirus in the UK.
