Moped rider in Deliveroo jacket 'smashed Bugatti with hammer in crime spree'

Thieves on mopeds attacked a millionaire’s £3,000,000 Bugatti supercar and attempted to steal his £110,000 Rolex watch in Mayfair, a court heard.

Footage caught the moment a boy, 15, dressed as a Deliveroo driver repeatedly hammered the window of Abdullah Al Basman’s Bugatti Chiron in Park Lane.

The helmeted robber then fled the scene with another man also wearing the food-delivery service uniform after Al-Basman drove away as the traffic eased.

The target of the ambush, which happened in broad daylight on August 21 last year, is thought to have been Al Basman’s Platinum Rolex Daytona.

The Kuwaiti millionaire was staying at the Berkeley Hotel, with witnesses claiming the thieves followed him from there to Hyde Park Corner.

On his social media, the jet-setting Al Basman often flaunts his collection of polished expensive cars and watches to his more than 10,000 followers.

Ronnie Reid, 20, from Finsbury Park, north London, is on trial as one of the two moped riders accused of carrying out a series of thefts that afternoon.

A 15-year-old boy has already admitted his involvement in the robberies, including using the claw hammer to strike Al Basman’s supercar/

Prosecutor Dickon Reid said the pair wore balaclavas, helmets and gloves and even rode mopeds with poorly taped-on numberplates to disguise themselves.

‘The pair were primarily focused on robbing people of expensive wristwatches. They were simply driving around looking for potential targets,’ Mr Reid said.

‘They were responsible for a series of attempted robberies and one robbery on the afternoon of August 21, 2022, which took place in the Belgravia and Mayfair district of central London.’

Jurors heard how this all unfolded in the space of just 45 minutes.

At around 4pm, Justin and Bradley Rizza were walking through Cadogan Square carrying shopping bags from the luxury department store, Fortnum and Mason.

With both brothers wearing Rolexes, the two teens drove towards them and attempted to ‘box them in’, the court heard.

‘Justin Rizza was confronted by Reid who screamed aggressively “what have you got?” and tried to get him to hand over items,’ the prosecutor said.

Bradley attempted to escape by vaulting a fence only for his shoe to become ‘impaled on the spikes and he was suspended upside down’.

Just 20 minutes later, the pair found their new target, Auday Tokatly, who was ‘dragged to the ground, kicked and punched in the head and legs’.

But a car driving around the corner gave Mr Tokatly a chance to escape and head inside Harrods.

After the attempted robbery against Al Basman, Mr Reid claimed the pair then approached Michael McKeown and his wife Juste outside a restaurant on their mopeds.

‘He saw the handle of a knife sticking out of (Ronnie’s) waistband, and he says he knew what was going to happen’ said the prosecutor.

Mr McKeown, wearing a £75,000 Audemars Piguet watch, sprinted across Curzon Street but was knocked by a vehicle before the teenager’s moped rammed him.

Juste had a ‘machete pointed in her face’, Mr Reid claimed, as she kicked one of the riders to protect her husband.

Andrei Karkar was the final victim of the afternoon. His watch was taken after the riders rammed him to the ground.

The teenager, 15, has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, criminal damage, possessing an offensive weapon, robbery and five counts of attempted robbery.

Reid denies being one of the riders as well as denying damaging property, two charges of having an offensive weapon, five counts of attempted robbery, dangerous driving, threatening another with an offensive weapon, and robbery.

The trial continues.
