Month's rain set to fall in hours as Met Office issues severe weather warning

Almost a month’s worth of rain could fall in one day over parts of the UK later.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued lasting from 1pm until 9pm, starting from the Midlands and East Anglia and stretching to the far north of mainland Scotland.

The Met Office warned that heavy showers may cause flooding and travel disruption, with a small chance of fast-flowing or deep flood waters causing danger to life.

Spokeswoman Nicola Maxey told Metro.co.uk the rain could make it difficult to drivers, as it could come down ‘so fast the windscreen wipers can’t keep up, and drains can’t keep up.

‘It’s the type of rain that will lead to flooding, and create spray on the roads.’

She said all of the areas covered by the warnings are at risk, but will not necessarily see these conditions.

Meteorologist Emma Smith said 30mm of rain could fall in one hour, while 50mm could fall in two to three hours.

The average amount of rainfall in July for the UK as a whole is 70mm, while the July average for England is 55-56mm – meaning that almost a month’s worth of rainfall could fall in a couple of hours on Thursday.

The yellow thunderstorm alert from the Met Office warns there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater and lightning strikes.

In places where there is flooding or lightning strikes, there is a chance of delays and cancellations to train and bus services.

Forecasters have also warned of difficult driving conditions, some road closures and power cuts.

The warnings clear by tomorrow, with none issued for the rest of the week so far.

Tomorrow there will be mainly dry and sunny spells in the South and West, with temperatures in the high teens or low twenties.
