Moment police scramble to stop Extinction Rebellion protesters blocking road

More than a dozen police officers have been filmed scrambling to stop a group of Extinction Rebellion protestors trying to block another major road in London with a huge bamboo structure.

Extinction Rebellion tried to block Cromwell Road, in South Kensington, during 12 days of mass demonstrations planned by the climate protest group.

Video shared by Met Police on Twitter shows officers taking on XR members as they carried the massive structure of the van to shut down the road.

The group has in the past week blocked a major junction in Covent Garden with a giant pink table and today shut Tower Bridge with a caravan and van.

Passerby Jason Sinclair witnessed the incident at 5.40pm on Sunday and revealed there were six police offices there for every protestor.

He added: ‘The Met blocked the road off with dozens of vans, so not sure how successful the attempt to stop the road getting blocked was.’

At least two activists were arrested and one woman can be heard questions why she was being cuffed as passersby stopped to film the commotion.

Met Police shared the post, adding: ‘This is the moment we disrupted an attempt by Extinction Rebellion to block a road.

‘We predicted where activists might strike, taking immediate action.

‘Throughout the past seven days, we have responded to several disruptive protests in London.’

It comes after about 11 Extinction Rebellion protesters glued or locked themselves to the railings inside the Science Museum last night.

Five people put their arms through the railings and glued their hands together so they are not damaging the museum’s property.

More protests are expected to take place in London this week as campaigners continue to call on the Government to end its investment in fossil fuels that are driving the climate emergency.
