Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge has taken over the role of “peacemaker” within the Royal Family since the death of the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip. According to a royal expert, Kate found the ongoing tensions between her husband and brother-in-law “very upsetting” and set out to bring them together during the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh.
Katie Nicholls said: “Kate has been very much a peacemaker behind the scenes.
“It’s no secret that the brothers fell out really very badly, at one point they weren’t even talking.
“There have been deep strains and tensions and a rift which has really divided the heart of the Royal Family and that’s been very upsetting for Kate to see.
“She knows how close William and Harry have always been but actually it was Kate who ultimately brought them together and you know in many ways the Royal Family have lost the patriarchal.”
Following the funeral of Prince Philip in St George’s Chapel on April 17, Kate can be seen conversing with Harry and walking between the brothers back to Windsor Castle.
Ms Nicholls continued: “Prince Philip was often the one who would sort out rifts within the family and here was Kate stepping into that role and I don’t think anyone could have watched that funeral and not thought of the brothers walking behind Diana’s coffin.
“William didn’t want to walk and Philip said to him if I walk will you walk and I think we’ve almost seen Kate say to William, ‘if I talk will you talk.’
“She instigated what seemed like a very natural coming together of the boys and they did talk. We wanted, the world wanted to see them shoulder by shoulder and they were and I think she would never admit it because she is actually quite like the late Duke of Edinburgh, very modest but she played an important role in that.”
Rumours of a rift between the two brothers began to circulate after the Cambridges and Sussexes decided to split their royal households in October 2018.
Following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from the Royal Family, their relationship is believed to have considerably worsened.
During the couple’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry described his current situation with William as “space” and said they were “on different paths”.
Meanwhile, Meghan spoke about the supposed feud between herself and Kate, revealing that it was in fact Kate who had made her cry in a spat over flower girl dresses in the lead up to the royal wedding.

The story had been inaccurately reported by the British press and led to the Duchess of Sussex feeling vilified.
Although Prince Harry has barely spent time with his royal relatives since the Megxit split, he displayed a united front with Prince William at the unveiling ceremony of Princess Diana’s statue on July 1.
Kate also reportedly reached out to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex following the birth of their newborn daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana.
Since her marriage to Prince William in 2011, Kate has gradually taken on a more senior role within the Royal Family. She is now regarded as one of the leading figures representing the Queen and as future Queen consort, plays a crucial role in The Firm.
