The conduct of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, both 39, has been referred to as a “masterclass of regal behaviour” following their appearance on the green carpet for last night’s inaugural ceremony. Taking place at London’s Alexandra Palace, the awards – founded by William – recognised five individuals who have spearheaded initiatives to help the environment amid the climate crisis.
While on the green carpet and socialising with celebrities, the couple’s body language exhibited that the pair are approachable, according to body language expert Judi James.
She told the Daily Mail’s FEMAIL segment, that the couple showed “modesty” while avoiding “showboating” while they rubbed shoulders with A-listers.
Judi told FEMAIL: “Their speeches on stage were performed separately rather than as an A-list double-act and they both delivered professionally, pointing focus towards their cause rather than themselves and the injection of subtle glamour they brought to the evening
“William’s understated professionalism was in contrast to his brother’s recent stage appearances that have involved much more of a rock-star-style revving up of the crowd and celebrity approach.”
Ms James claimed that the actions of William contrast to that of his brother Prince Harry, 37, who has exhibited “rockstar” style behaviour previously.
Ms James makes reference to the appearance of Harry and his wife Meghan Markle at Global Citizen Live, in New York last month.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared onstage holding hands amid loud cheers and called on nations to work together to end the COVID-19 pandemic through vaccine equity initiatives.
At the time, the body language expert said the couple “reverted back to their more familiar-looking PDAs’ as they were “greeted like rock stars” by the audience.
When referring to the Cambridges though, Ms James referred to the couple as both “elegant” and “confident”
She said: “This elegant, confident but – in terms of their body language – understated appearance from William and Kate looked like a masterclass in modern regal behaviour.”
Ms James said the couple used non-verbal signals to convey “perfect equality of status and a passion for their cause”.
She also claimed that royals mirrored one another’s actions, and exchanged subtle glances as means of displaying “normal affection” and to show “they were having a really good time”.

A similarity between both brothers Harry and William was pointed out by the expert though, through a move she describes as “a ‘paperclip’ gesture”.
She said that when future king, William, arrived at the event he was seen “pushing some of his fingers inside his jacket at waist level to hold it together while some of the fingers stayed outside”.
She signified that this is “an identical self-comfort barrier gesture to Harry’s” and showed “small signs of nerves” from William ahead of the night’s proceedings.
She went on to praise William and Kate for their display of “equality”.
Judi said: “Their sweeping arrival showed both walking empty-handed with their arms down at their sides and both posed with hands clasped in front of their torsos in a display of mirroring and synchronicity.
“William’s ‘Ok!’ as they turned to pose for the cameras came with a small rise to his toes and down again to brace himself and it was Kate who copied her husband’s hand clasp or ‘fig leaf’ pose to project the look of royal peas in the pod”.
Ms James also said the royals seemed “in awe” of environmental icon Sir David Attenborough, who was in attendance after launching the Earthshot Awards project with Prince William in 2020.
Judi explained: “Kate clutched both of Emma Thompson’s wrists as they chatted and although Attenborough was seen bowing to the couple their facial expressions suggested they were in awe of him”.
