An angry mob pelted a female tourist with water and hurled insults at her after she climbed the steps of an ancient Mayan temple and danced at the top.
The woman enraged other visitors milling around the Temple of Kukulcán, a landmark in the world-famous archaeological site of Chichén Itzá, a former Maya city in Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula.
As she scaled the 90 steps, something that has been banned since 2008, the crowd can be heard shouting ‘jail, jail, jail’ and ‘lock her up’.
Others suggested she should be sacrificed to the gods.
When she reached the top of the temple in Chichén Itzá, named one of UNESCO’s seven wonders of the world in 2007, the tourist drew calls of ‘a-hole’ and ‘idiot’ as she gyrated her hips and waved her arms.
She needed a guard’s escort by the time she returned to ground when other visitors began hurling water at her, shoving her, and yanking at her hair.
Locals later dubbed her ‘Lady Chichén Itzá’.
In a statement, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) said the ancient monument was not damaged by the stunt, El Pais reports.
Trampling on the temple is reportedly punishable by fines of between £1,500 and £7,500, depending on the damage caused.
It was built between the eight and 12th centuries and served as the temple of the Kukulcán god.
According to INAH figures, Chichén Itzá was the most-visited archaeological site in the country from January to September, having welcomed more than two million tourists.
