Missing toddler's mom charged with murdering him as remains found in landfill

The mother of a missing 20-month-old boy has been charged in his disappearance and death as authorities believe they have found his remains in a landfill.

Leilani Simon, 22, was arrested on Monday, more than six weeks after Quinton Simon vanished. Leilani reported her son missing from their home in Savannah, Georgia, on October 5 and the search for him made national headlines.

‘Millions of people have followed Quinton’s case and have been awaiting answers,’ tweeted the Chatham County Police Department.

‘We are deeply saddened by this case, but we are thankful that we are one step closer to justice for little Quinton.’

On Monday night, Police Chief Jeff Hadley confirmed that they had located human remains and that a DNA analysis on them was underway.

‘What happened to the child is unthinkable,’ said Hadley.

‘We had every belief he would be in the landfill. We have put thousands of hours into this.’

A teary-eyed Hadley reiterated that Leilani ‘has been the sole suspect since the beginning’.

‘We feel that we have a very strong case,’ Hadley said. ‘She doesn’t deserve a Thanksgiving, frankly. Quinton deserves that.’

Leilani was charged with murder and is being held at the Chatham County Detention Center as she awaits her bond hearing.

Police said not other arrests in the case are anticipated.
