'Miracle' teen who survived bus stop shooting was 'in wrong place at wrong time'
Police said it was an ‘absolute miracle and a credit to the NHS’ that a girl survived a bus stop shooting while she was on her way home from school in Liverpool.
The 15-year-old, who was ‘in the wrong place at the wrong time’, sustained a ‘devastating’ wound to her upper body and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
Since the horrific incident on Tuesday evening, a GoFundMe page has been set up by a family member to raise money for her future and recovery, with more than £1,200 already donated.
‘This appeal will not mend the injuries the stray bullet has caused, including the damage that it has left behind on her innocent young body’, they said, writing on the fundraiser page.
‘She will be suffering for many years to come and will undoubtedly suffer flashbacks for some time.
‘She will require all her strength to get through this with plenty of family support.’
Four men have been arrested since at least one gunman opened fire on Upper Warwick Street, less than two miles from Liverpool Lime Street station.
An 18-year-old man from Toxteth was arrested this morning on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
In the meantime, three other men – one aged 27, another aged 21 and the third aged 60 – have been released under investigation.
Earlier this week, Mark Kameen, of Merseyside Police, described the attack as ‘callous and cowardly’ during a press conference at force HQ in the city.
He added: ‘It is an absolute miracle, and credit to the NHS, that this young woman has survived.’
Police believe shots were fired by ‘one or more’ people on bikes, who were all wearing balaclavas and dark clothing, before they made off in the nearby North Hill Street area.
Mr Kameen added: ‘When the ambulance crew arrived, following calls from members of the public, they found a young girl who had suffered a gunshot wound to her upper body and some devastating injuries, as you can imagine.’
A short time after the girl was shot, a 21-year-old man turned up at hospital with a gunshot injury to his arm, which police say could be linked.
In the wake of the shooting police have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and combing through CCTV footage of the area to try and find out what happened.
