Milan rocked by huge explosion with cars up in flames

There has been a huge explosion in northern Italy this morning.

Several vehicles have gone up in flames after the blast in Milan.

A van had reportedly caught fire before the explosion, according to local police.

Terrifying footage taken a matter of yards from the incident in the city centre shows multiple cars on fire and stunned bystanders watching on.

Huge plumes of thick black smoke can be seen billowing into the sky.

The road has been completely blocked off by the raging fire.

Firefighters are at the scene in the Porta Romana area of the city which has been cordoned off by police.

According to Italian daily La Repubblica, the van which initially caught fire was carrying gas cylinders when it exploded, triggering ‘domino explosions’.

At least five cars and four mopeds are reportedly alight.

A nearby school and nursing home have been evacuated.
