Mike Tindall has admitted he made a serious royal blunder when he “almost curtsied to the King” during a lapse of concentration as he discussed coming to terms with the next stage of royal life. Speaking on his podcast The Good, The Bad & The Rugby, which he co-hosts with presenter Alex Payne and former England international James Haskell, Mr Tindall said he fell into a “lower bow” as he tried to style out mistakenly adopting the typically female greeting afforded to the monarch. He claimed he had been “following behind his wife” and without thinking began to copy her curtsy before realising his mistake.
Mr Tindall said: “I almost curtsied to the King the other day without thinking about it. I was just following behind my wife, saw her curtsy and sort of [moved], but fortunately, I didn’t.”
Mr Payne said: “Did you curtsy into a bow?” Mr Tindall said: “Yeah, sort of. It was like a lower bow.”
Mr Haskell then burst into laughter at the surreal sight of his podcast co-host in a curtsy position.
Mr Payne asked: “Did the King clock it and sort of raise an eyebrow?”
Mr Tindall said: “No, I think I styled it out alright. I might have looked like I stubbed my toe on something, on the floor.”
Asked if this was during the state funeral, in front of several billion people, Mr Tindall added: “No, no, no. That was not in front of many people.”
Mike Tindall was originally known for winning the Rugby Union World Cup in 2003 as part of the successful English side.
He played for England for more than a decade, captaining the side on several occasions.
He met Zara Phillips, the Princess Royal’s daughter, in 2003 during the international tournament in Australia.
The pair later dated for several years before getting engaged in 2010. Both have had hugely successful sporting careers, with Zara Tindall receiving an MBE in 2007 for her services to equestrianism.
Their engagement was confirmed by Buckingham Palace on July 10, 2010, and the pair married just over a year later at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh.
The ceremony, just a few months after the wedding of Prince William and Catherine, the now Princess of Wales, was a smaller event but senior royals were present.
The former England captain has captured the public eye as a figure who was already celebrated by Britons before marrying into the much-revered Royal Family.
He has been praised for being a humble and calming presence in the family, and a relatable character.

Zara Tindall then suffered two miscarriages before having the couple’s second daughter, Lena Elizabeth Tindall, on June 18, 2018.
Their third child, a son named Lucas Philip Tindall, was born on March 21, 2021.
Mike and Zara both attended the Queen’s state funeral at Westminster Abbey last week but their children did not come to the event.
