Mike Tindall, who is married to the Queen’s oldest grandchild Zara, has paid tribute to the Queen in recent days as the royals prepare for her funeral. The former England rugby player shared a sketch of a crying corgi. This came after he shared another image of the Queen being projected onto the Sydney Opera House. He was in the Australian city when he met his wife Zara. He later married her in 2011.

Since then he has been a well known and familiar face at royal events. He also had a good relationship with the Queen, as seen when he was caught performing a magic trick to her at Royal Ascot in 2019.

ITV Sport cameras were watching the former rugby player as took off his tophat to reveal a mini replica inside.

Her Majesty looked confused at first but broke into laughter once she realised what Mr Tindall was up to.

The ITV commentator said: “Not sure what Mike Tindall just found in his top hat there!”

A lip reader later told Femail that the Queen responded: “Oh look at that!”

The Tindalls are extremely close to Prince William and Prince Harry. Mike and Zara’s two girls, Mia and Lena, are similar ages to William and Kate’s children.

Mia caught attention when she held the Queen’s Launer purse in a 90th birthday portrait shot by Annie Leibovitz. Reflecting on the incident, Mr Tindall told Good Morning Britian: “She was being a bit naughty.

“The Queen got it quite right when she told her, ‘Just hold the handbag now,’ and she did that. It ended up being a great photo of her.”

Following the Queen’s passing last week Mr Tindall spoke to the Telegraph about his admiration for her. He branded her an “amazing woman”.

He added: “I can only say how kind they’ve been to me, and how welcoming they’ve been to me since joining the family. And how they’ve made my family welcome. I’ve always felt part of it and I think that’s down to what an amazing woman the Queen is. They’re a fantastic family.”

Mr Tindall was also close to Princess Anne, it has been reported. They both have a shared love for sport, especially rugby. But while Mr Tindall used to turn out for England, Anne is a supporter of the Scottish team. The Princess Royal rarely misses their home matches and often travels abroad to watch.

His relationship with the new Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, was also summed up by his comical remarks about Kate’s appearance at Twickenham Stadium. Speaking on the ‘The Good, The Bad & The Rugby’ podcast, he was asked how good Kate is at rugby.

He said: “I text Ellis [Genge] and said, ‘Mate, please tell me anything she messed up on’ so I could sort of… family WhatsApp group, get to her, and he said, ‘No she was actually pretty good, and she was really good at kicking and I was like [sighs]. But she has this competitive nature.”
