Little Lucas has the middle name Philip after the Duke of Edinburgh – who also made an unusual entrance by being born on a kitchen table in Corfu 99 years ago. Mike, 42, said on his podcast, The Good, The Bad & The Rugby of his baby son: “He arrived very quickly. Didn’t make it to hospital. On the bathroom floor.” He described how he rushed to get a mat for Zara, 39, a former world equestrian champion and Olympic silver medallist.

He added: “So yeah, it was running to the gym, get a mat, get into the bathroom, get the mat on the floor, towels down, brace, brace, brace.”

Lucas Philip Tindall was born on Sunday at the family’s home on the Gatcombe Park estate in Gloucestershire, weighing 8lbs 4oz. Former England rugby star Mike said his wife’s friend was with them after Zara had been having contractions in the night.

He added: “She recognised we wouldn’t have got to hospital in time. Fortunately the midwife who was going to meet us at the hospital wasn’t that far away. So she drove up just as we had assumed the position and the second midwife came just after the head had arrived.”

Mike, who has longed for a son after having daughters Mia, seven and Lena, two, joked the baby would be his final child.

He said: “I literally was like ‘Yep, snip, snip, snip. I’ve got a boy. I’m out. I’m out of here’.”

He added: “The best thing about being at home was, as soon as he’s wrapped up, he’s skin on skin, straight downstairs. TV room. Golf on. This is what we’re doing.”

Mike said Mia was over the moon about her brother and Lena declared Lucas was “her baby”.

Zara, who is the Queen’s granddaughter and daughter to Princess Anne, had two miscarriages before Lena was born in 2018. Mike said his wife was doing fine. He added: “She was a warrior as always.”

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: “The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are delighted with the news and look forward to meeting their 10th great grandchild when circumstances allow.”

Lucas is 22nd in line to the throne and not an HRH. His mother was sixth but is now 19th.
