Michelin stars are the ultimate sign of culinary excellence. The best chefs in the country vie every year to receive one of these prestigious awards, guaranteeing their restaurant’s place on the map forever after. The 2023 guide has bestowed more stars on kitchens across the British Isles than ever before. Check out Express.co.uk’s map and exhaustive list to see where your nearest fine dining destination is.
Horses were a far more popular means of transport than cars at the turn of the 20th century – much to the dismay of French tyre manufacturer Michelin.
In 1900, the enterprising creators of the removable tyre and the instantly recognisable Michelin Man mascot (technically called Bibdendum) began distributing a little red book to France’s automobile owners for free, providing driving maps complete with petrol stations, mechanics and places to eat.
An annual Guide Michelin was published for the British Isles from 1911 onwards. The infamous restaurant ratings were introduced in 1931, the outstanding kitchens being awarded either zero, one, two, or three stars – the highest honour reserved for “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.”
On Monday evening, the stars of the Michelin Guide 2023 Great Britain & Ireland were unveiled in dramatic fashion at a ceremony in Silverstone, honouring the company’s racing pedigree at the home of the British Formula 1 Grand Prix.

So who are the stars aligned for in 2023? Dispelling all notions of the inadequacy of British cuisine, 203 restaurants in the UK were awarded at least one Michelin star this year.
All told this means British soil is home to the seventh-most Michelin stars in the world, outclassing the likes South Korea and Greece, but trailing world-beating France on 758.
The cream of the crop this year includes 170 one-Michelin-star restaurants, 25 two-Michelin-star restaurants and just eight three-Michelin-star restaurants.
In terms of their location, London was the most star-studded city with 89 across 73 restaurants. But more are peppered around the country, many in unexpected places.

Renowned for the harshness of their reviews, Michelin critics seldom sugarcoat their judgements, yet this year all of the UK’s three-starred restaurants maintained their prestigious titles.
These are Alain Roux at The Waterside Inn, L’Enclume, Core by Clare Smyth, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, Helen Darroze at the Connaught, Sketch (The Lecture Room and Library) and The Fat Duck.
Three new restaurants joined the awarded two-star class in 2023 – Alex Dilling at Hotel Cafe Royal in Westminster, Brett Graham at The Ledbury in Notting Hill and Ahmet Dede at Dede in Baltimore, Ireland.
A further 20 were elevated to a single-star for the first time this year, including The Tudor Pass in Surrey, Lumiere Restaurant in Gloucestershire and Solstice in Newcastle.
Alongside the more pricey venues, in 1997, Michelin also began giving out Bib Gourmand badges to the best value eateries. A total of 98 restaurants boast as much in the UK, with 20 added in 2023, including The Blaise Inn pub in Bristol, Flint House in Brighton and Kushi-Ya in Nottingham.
