Michael Gove reveals shocking choice for who would be ‘best’ as new Labour leader
Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Michael Gove, joined Sky News’ Sophy Ridge to discuss the Government’s plans post-election. The Tory MP confirmed that getting Brexit done is the Government’s top priority, as well as education, the NHS and not approving a second Scottish independence referendum. However, he also had an interesting choice when asked who he would like to see as the next leader of the Labour Party.
Mr Gove told Sky: “That’s a matter for them.
“The person who would be best, of course, is Caroline Flint.
“But sadly, she’s no longer eligible.”
Ms Flint lost her Don Valley seat in South Yorkshire after 22 years in the job.
Thursday’s election night saw 24 ‘red wall’ constituencies elect a Tory for the first time in decades.
The now former Don Valley MP has called for party leader Jeremy Corbyn to stand down and slammed “influential Labour figures with North London postcodes”.
Ms Flint was one of a number of Labour MPs from leave-voting seats who criticised the leadership for its stance on Brexit.
Mr Gove is thought to be set to receive a big promotion by Boris Johnson by leading a new “beefed up” trade department.
He told Ms Ridge: “I don’t know.
“I think I have a job in the cabinet office, which I’m carrying on with at the moment.
“But obviously decisions as to who should occupy which post are quite rightly for the Prime Minister.”

When asked if he was going to be involved with the trade negotiations with the EU, the Lancaster Chancellor said: “These are all questions for the Prime Minister. I won’t speculate on them.
“I want to make sure that the Government delivers on getting Brexit done, which we will.
“I also want to make sure that the Government concentrates on making sure that we guarantee funding for the NHS.
“I’m particularly keen to ensure that the Government also send economic opportunity to those parts of the country that haven’t enjoyed it.
“That means that we need to improve education. One of the things we are going is making sure that the amount that we spend on children’s education in primary and secondary school is levelled up.”
